At the 92nd Academy Awards on February 9, 2020, Parasite won best picture, directing, original screenplay and international feature film. The best-picture result made it the first non-English-language film to win the Academy’s top prize. That shorthand is accurate but incomplete. Reading the four categories together shows recognition of the film as a produced work, Bong Joon Ho’s direction, the screenplay by Bong and Han Jin Won, and South Korea’s submitted international feature.

The official record
The Academy’s ceremony archive identifies the event as honoring films released in 2019. It records Kwak Sin Ae and Bong Joon Ho for best picture; Bong for directing; Bong and Han Jin Won for original screenplay; and Parasite, submitted by South Korea, for international feature film. Awards-year labels can otherwise create confusion: this is the 2020 ceremony and a 2019 film. Hollywood Current uses the ceremony date as the event date, not an invented site-publication date.

Why best picture was the threshold
International films had competed for best picture before Parasite, and the Academy maintained a separate international-feature category. The breakthrough was not that a film made outside the United States had finally received any Oscar. It was the top category’s first win by a film not in English. The Academy itself used that description in its July 2020 membership announcement, making the institution’s later characterization a primary source for the historical claim.

The screenplay and directing wins matter
Best picture can flatten hundreds of creative decisions into a single headline. Parasite’s other awards preserve more of the craft record. Original screenplay recognized the structure and writing credited to Bong and Han. Directing recognized Bong’s orchestration of tone, performance and visual information. International feature linked the work to South Korea’s submission. None of these awards proves a universal judgment of quality; together they show that voters recognized the film across authorship, execution and overall production.

A national first without reducing the film to nationality
The Academy’s nomination fact sheet noted that Parasite was South Korea’s first nomination in the international-feature category. CJ ENM’s contemporaneous account likewise described the four wins and their place in Korean film history. Those facts are meaningful, but they should not turn the film into merely a representative symbol. The result crossed institutional boundaries while the work remained a specific Korean story about class, space, labor and family.

How to archive an awards breakthrough
Use the awarding body for the winner list, name recipients exactly as credited, and separate ceremony date from release year. Then corroborate the “first” with an institutional or specialist source rather than repeating a red-carpet headline. Record nominations separately from wins, too: Parasite received six nominations but won four categories. Finally, resist projecting a single win into a claim that barriers disappeared. Parasite changed the Academy’s record on February 9, 2020. Whether later voting sustained broader international recognition is a separate question requiring its own multi-year evidence.
