Two-thirds of the way through 2026, this year has already produced history-making awards, a wedding that dominated the summer, and a record-setting late-night farewell. Several long-running legal cases also ended, and a media megadeal landed in court. Here are 15 stories from January 1 to September 17 that we could confirm with dates from reliable sources, along with where each one stands now.
Nikki Glaser hosted the Golden Globes for the second year in a row. One Battle After Another and Hamnet won the top film prizes, and Adolescence led the TV categories with four wins.
Status: Both films went on to win major awards at the Oscars.
The comic actor, known for Schitt's Creek and Home Alone, died at 71, Variety reported. Her death came as a shock to many fans of her work, which spanned several decades of film and television comedy.
Status: ABC News later reported her official cause of death.
Debí Tirar Más Fotos won the Grammy for album of the year. It was the first Spanish-language album to take the top prize, PBS News and Variety reported.
How it ended: Rolling Stone reported that his streaming numbers jumped after the win.
A week after the Grammys, Bad Bunny headlined the halftime show. Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin joined him, Deadline's review noted. Nielsen-based figures reported by CNN and Forbes put the show at 128.2 million viewers, and the game itself was the second most-watched Super Bowl ever.
How it ended: Billboard ranked it the fourth-biggest halftime audience ever. It did not break Kendrick Lamar's 2025 record.
A viral AI video that pitted Tom Cruise against Brad Pitt, made with ByteDance's Seedance 2.0 tool, alarmed Hollywood. The Motion Picture Association called on ByteDance to rein in the model, and ByteDance said it would add safeguards.
Status: In August, Deadline reported that Seedance 2.5 blocks many Hollywood imitations.
British police arrested the former prince on suspicion of misconduct in public office, after new disclosures in the Epstein files. He was released under investigation later that day, and police searched properties connected to him.
Status: He was under investigation as of the latest reports we could verify. We could not confirm any charges.
WBD's board decided Paramount Skydance's offer was better than its agreement with Netflix. Netflix walked away with a breakup fee of about $2.8 billion. WBD shareholders approved the roughly $110 billion deal on April 23, and the Justice Department cleared it on June 12.
Status: Pending. On July 13, 12 states, including California, sued to block the merger. Paramount agreed to push back the closing deadline to as late as June 2027.
One Battle After Another won best picture, and Paul Thomas Anderson won best director. Michael B. Jordan won best actor for Sinners, which took home four Oscars. Jessie Buckley won best actress for Hamnet, the first Irish performer to win that category, according to Variety.
How it ended: The top prizes were split between the year's two leading films.
The WGA reached a surprise tentative agreement with the studios about a month before its contract expired, and it protected the writers' health plan. Members ratified the four-year deal in April. SAG-AFTRA members approved their new TV/theatrical contracts in June.
How it ended: New contracts were ratified, avoiding a repeat of the 2023 strikes.
In early April, a judge dismissed Blake Lively's sexual harassment claims against Justin Baldoni but allowed her retaliation claim to go to trial. Weeks before the trial was set to start, the two sides settled. Baldoni's lawyer later made the settlement public, ABC News reported.
How it ended: The case settled. NBC News later reported that Lively was awarded about $400,000 in legal fees connected to Baldoni's dismissed lawsuit.
Harvey Weinstein's third New York trial on a rape charge involving Jessica Mann ended in a mistrial when the jury deadlocked. In June, prosecutors dropped the charge after Mann said she could not go through a fourth trial.
Status: An appeals court has upheld his Los Angeles conviction but ordered a new sentence.
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert ended with a star-studded finale. It drew 6.74 million viewers, which Variety and TheWrap reported was the show's most-watched weeknight episode ever.
Status: In September, a report said Jimmy Kimmel Live! would end after next season, and ABC called it "inaccurate." Kimmel's contract runs into 2027.
The couple married in a celebrity-filled ceremony about 10 months after their engagement. CBS News and ABC News reported that Adam Sandler officiated.
The director and his wife were killed in their Brentwood home in December 2025. Their son Nick Reiner has pleaded not guilty to murder charges. A grand jury indictment in August alleged that he was "lying in wait." On September 15, prosecutors said they will not seek the death penalty.
Status: Pending. The defendant is presumed innocent.
The Pitt won outstanding drama series for the second year in a row. Widow's Bay was the big winner of the night, and Apple TV led all platforms, according to Deadline and NBC News.
