For 13 years, one of the most famous pop stars in the world did not legally control her own money or many of her personal decisions. Then, in a fast-moving stretch of 2021, Britney Spears spoke out in open court, hired her own lawyer, saw her father suspended, and walked out of the conservatorship for good.
This explainer walks through the court timeline from 2020 to the November 2021 termination, the legal fights that followed, and her 2023 memoir, based on court reporting from outlets including NPR, PBS and Variety.
A conservatorship is a court arrangement in which a judge gives someone else legal authority over a person's affairs. Britney Spears' arrangement began in 2008 and had two parts: one that governed her finances (the estate) and one that oversaw her personal well-being, according to NPR. Her father, Jamie Spears (legally James Spears), served as conservator of her estate.
The case was handled in Los Angeles Superior Court. From 2020 onward, the judge was Brenda Penny.
This article does not discuss the reasons the arrangement was originally put in place, and it does not speculate about anyone's health.
The fan-driven #FreeBritney movement had been calling for an end to the arrangement for years. In August 2020, the dispute became part of the court record in a new way: Spears, through her court-appointed attorney Samuel Ingham, asked the court to end her father's control, as PinkNews reported. A ruling on her request to remove him was pushed into 2021, The Guardian reported.
In a filing, Ingham said Spears "strongly opposed" having her father as conservator and would refuse to perform if he were in charge of her career, NPR reported.
In November 2020, Judge Penny did not remove Jamie Spears, but she agreed to add a financial firm, Bessemer Trust, as a co-conservator of the estate, per NPR.
In early February 2021, The New York Times documentary Framing Britney Spears debuted on FX and Hulu, putting #FreeBritney activists and the media's treatment of the singer in front of a wide new audience, NPR noted.
On February 11, 2021, Judge Penny ruled against Jamie Spears' objections over how Bessemer Trust would share power as co-conservator. The conservatorship itself stayed in place.
The turning point came on June 23, 2021, when Spears addressed the court directly in a long statement that was heard publicly. NPR published the transcript the next day.
"I just want my life back. And it's been 13 years and it's enough."

Her statement described restrictions on her finances, work and personal life. The testimony opened a visible divide within her conservatorship team, NBC News reported, and Jamie Spears asked for an investigation into her allegations, according to CBS Los Angeles.
A week later, a ruling came down denying her earlier request to have her father removed, a decision on a petition that had been filed before her testimony.
The fallout moved quickly. Samuel Ingham, her court-appointed attorney, resigned after the June hearing, and Bessemer Trust withdrew from the arrangement, PBS reported.
On July 14, 2021, Judge Penny approved Spears' request to hire a lawyer of her own choosing: Mathew Rosengart, a former federal prosecutor. At that hearing Spears told the court, "If this is not abuse, I don't know what is," per PBS.
Rosengart immediately made his goal clear: "We will be moving promptly and aggressively for his removal," he said of Jamie Spears. His office then filed to remove Jamie Spears as conservator, NBC News reported.
On August 12, 2021, Jamie Spears said he would relinquish his role as conservator of his daughter's finances, but gave no timeline and maintained there was no valid reason to remove him and that he had always acted in her best interests, NPR reported.
On September 7, 2021, he went further and filed a petition asking the court to end the conservatorship entirely. The filing stated: "If Ms. Spears wants to terminate the conservatorship and believes that she can handle her own life, Mr. Spears believes that she should get that chance." Britney Spears' side then filed its consent to ending the arrangement.
Her team still wanted him out immediately. On September 29, 2021, Judge Penny suspended Jamie Spears as conservator of the estate. "The current arrangement is untenable. It reflects a toxic environment which requires the suspension of James Spears," the judge said, according to NPR. She appointed John Zabel, a certified public accountant, as temporary conservator of the estate and set a hearing for November 12.
On November 12, 2021, Judge Penny terminated the conservatorship, effective immediately, finding it was "no longer required," NPR reported. Spears was not required to undergo a capacity evaluation for the arrangement to end. Zabel stayed on briefly to transfer her assets into her trust.
Spears celebrated on social media, calling it the "best day ever," per NPR.
Ending the conservatorship did not end the litigation. Rosengart's team pursued claims about Jamie Spears' conduct during the arrangement, and disputes followed over who would pay the lawyers from the long case, including a request by her mother, Lynne Spears, that Britney's estate cover about $600,000 in legal fees, which Britney asked the judge to deny.
Jamie Spears has maintained that he acted in his daughter's best interests, per NPR's reporting on his 2021 filings.
In late April 2024, Britney and Jamie Spears settled their dispute over alleged financial misconduct during the conservatorship, as Variety reported. The Associated Press noted the deal avoided a long, potentially revealing trial.
In February 2025, reports based on settlement paperwork said Britney Spears had paid more than $2 million toward her father's legal bills, as reported via Yahoo Entertainment; the settlement reportedly stated that no party admitted wrongdoing.
In October 2023, Spears published her memoir, The Woman in Me, telling her own story of fame and the conservatorship years. It sold 1.1 million copies in the United States in its first week, Variety and NBC News reported, and Publishers Weekly confirmed sales above 1 million.

The main legal dispute between Britney Spears and her father was resolved by settlement in 2024, with reported terms stating no party admitted wrongdoing.
